On Sat 5 March the Project Hotspot team got together with their buddies from the Waitara Kaimoana Survey and the Taranaki Conservationists to run a beach clean-up at Waitara as part of Seaweek 2016. It was a glorious day and the turnout was a spectacular with over 100 local residents providing a helping hand.
The event provided an excellent opportunity to spread the word about the Curious Minds citizen science projects and to highlight the harmful impacts of litter on the marine environment.
Everyone headed down the beach with great enthusiasm and within the hour a huge volume of rubbish had been collected including tyres, bed frames and even a bike.
When the hour was up, the volunteers assembled for a group photo followed by a well-earned Green Meadows sausage sizzle.
All in all, it was a highly successful joint community group event with an amazing vibe thanks in no small part to the wonderful Waitara community and numerous other dedicated volunteers from around the Taranaki region. Nga mihi.
